Conficker over-confidence. Just because nothing happened doesn't mean you're safe.

Friday, April 3rd 2009 @ 10:27 AM (not yet rated)    post viewed 1588 times

Because the Conficker virus blocks an infected computer's access to certain sites (as do many other viruses), viewing a simple web page can tell you a lot about whether your system might still be infected - even after the hype seems to have settled.

It's a very clever test, unless the virus morphs again in a way that causes this test to fail. So, it's not a guarantee, but it is interesting...

Click HERE to take the Conficker EYE Chart Test.

By following the instructions on the page at this address, you can see whether the key anti-virus sites are inaccessible or not. If any they are not accessible, the chart instructions will tell you what the likely cause is.

Give it a try!

Meanwhile, the discussion continues on whether or not Conficker was hyped too much. I don't think so. There are so many other risks that require the same type of diligence, you need to remain alert.

Brian Krebs' article on this topic is very good. Click HERE to read it.

I am now offering monthly briefings, tailored to organizations that want to build and sustain security awareness for staff. Just because your security team is too busy to do its own training and awareness doesn't mean you can't have an economical way to address human security risks.
