Has anyone ever seen the "out of sight, out of mind" security phenomenon? In other words, if people aren't thinking explicitly about confidentiality (protection against unauthorized disclosure), integrity (protection against unauthorized modification) or availability (protection against loss of access), one of these things will very likely come back to bite you in the butt.As Dilbert finds out, his boss is not thinking about availability - i.e. making sure the system works as it should, when it should; let alone worrying about confidentiality or integrity. He's just thinking about the cost of what he can see and touch (which doesn't include wireless data signals).

You might have done this before, to delay the inevitable. So, when you ask somebody what their status is, it doesn't hurt to dig a bit further and ask for the basis of their assessment. Otherwise, you may be getting a false sense of security, like Dilbert's boss in this cartoon. (Even though your team may have a track record of good assessments, when it comes to security, even good people tend to be over-optimistic.)
