Maybe Security Pros Look Too Much Like Hackers [Dilbert]

Tuesday, July 5th 2011 @ 8:28 PM (not yet rated)    post viewed 4096 times

OK. So, this cartoon is not really about security people and hackers, but it made me think of them. So, there's that.

In the security world, there's often some truth to the old saying, "It takes one to know one." When it comes to recognizing, characterizing, tracking down and neutralizing hackers, security professionals have to think like their adversaries. They shouldn't necessarily look and act like them, but often they do.

Dilbert is recognized as looking like he could be a guy who makes cell phones - the ones that people hate, either because they drop calls or have no battery life. So, maybe security professionals remind people too much of the deviants who install bad software on your computers and make everyone's lives a living hell - maybe not for the same reasons, but there could be a connection.  If interacting with us causes others to reach for their portable cross-bows, maybe we security folk should consider getting make-overs.

Of course, our biggest fear is that people won't believe what we say if we don't walk, talk and dress like the bad guys we claim to understand. What do you think?
