Context is King when there's too much security information available

As Chris Anderson says in his book, The Long Tail, “Context is King” in a world where there is way more information than you have time to sift through.
People desperately need help in sorting out what security information is relevant to them. Which vendors and technologies to trust, which browsers to use, which updates are important, which sites to give personal information to… it’s not getting any easier.
Instead of looking to the media for information, or doing endless Google searches, it’s time for people interested in finding the optimal amount of security for their business to seek trusted connections to places where they will get business-oriented interpretation and guidance.
Employers can aid their employees by not only telling them what their security policies and procedures are, but by encouraging them to collaborate on categorizing their information assets and figuring out how to protect them, whether the policies explicitly say to do it or not.
Setting up communities and resources that have not only a business view of security issues, but have a healthy sampling of representatives from their own industry or vertical market will also make it easier to know what security guidance is relevant, and what is not.
The Streetwise Security Zone (at http://www.streetwise-security-zone.com) is building a community for empowering individuals who want to collaborate with others, and to be proactive in seeking security awareness training and education that is relevant to their jobs.
For people who want to try it out, the basic membership for using the discussion forums is free. There's also a free podcast available to non-members. Public "Townhall Sessions" are offered via Ustream.tv. Members can also participate in Live Netcasts for an interactive coaching session on various topics.
Putting important information like security advisories and best practices into a business context, as a trusted source, will give employees and managers the confidence they need to work more efficiently, and with acceptable risks to information security.
