Looking for security connections and resources in your own back yard

Wednesday, April 1st 2009 @ 7:04 PM (not yet rated)    post viewed 1081 times

This week I've been taking some time to start sniffing around my own back yard for people with whom I can network about security awareness and training. I found an interesting podcast that's being produced right here in Ottawa by Microsoft Canada - The Microsoft IT Manager Podcast. This is a podcast that assumes a certain degree of familiarity with technology and the issues faced by IT Managers.

The first episode I listened to was Episode 27 - Security Coffee Talk. In this episode Rick Claus discusses IT security challenges for small businesses with Hugh Lindley of Aveleris. Coincidentally, Hugh was a mentor of mine when I was studying for my Certified Information System Security Professional exam in 2002. Bruce Cowper, Microsoft Canada's Chief Security Advisor was also in the discussion.

Some good tips they had in this podcast for business IT people in any city, were to "start getting connected locally" with associations like the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), and ISACA. There are often chapters in major cities, and they can be a good place to start networking with security professionals in the community. I think that's great advice, and I'm hoping to follow this advice, to connect with and help out more businesses locally.

The panel in this podcast mentions that you may be able to locate some free services through these associations. In fact, currently, while launching my Streetwise Security Awareness Program, I am offering a limited number of free Lunch and Learn sessions on the risks of social networking tools like Facebook, with practical tips on how to deal with them.

So, if you happen to be a member of ISSA or ISACA, or are looking for some free resources to try out, please let me know - even if you're not in Ottawa. You may be able to gain some value out of the multi-media resources here in The Streetwise Security Zone. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about how to start making connections through me, or in your own local community.

I am now offering monthly briefings, tailored to organizations that want to build and sustain security awareness for staff. Just because your security team is too busy to do its own training and awareness doesn't mean you can't have an economical way to address human security risks.
