Risks in the News

This is just a reminder to be on guard for fundraising scams related to disasters such as Hurricane Gustav. There has been a rash of activity in registering Internet domain names related to the hurricane name and presumed relief initiatives.

Apparently, having a real URL with a meaningful name in it is enough to convince some people that the operation is legitimate.

If you get a call, be very suspicious, and if you're at all unsure, use reputable charity services such as The Red Cross. If you search out the website or contact information it is likely to be more reliable.

The scammers may promise that a higher percentage of funds will go to the relief efforts if you donate directly through them. But really, how can you possibly verify it?

Don't forget to let your staff know about these risks so they don't get scammed at work, or at home.
