It's the buzz word of 2009 - Social Media. Seems like you can't really avoid hearing about how it's going to revolutionize marketing in the coming years (or how it already has).
I don't doubt that it will. But I've done a lot of research on how to use social media in the past year - from Facebook and Linked In to Twitter and YouTube. As much as I love the business value that these tools can enable, I have a very bad feeling about what lies ahead for businesses that rush into the middle of the stream without considering some of the information security risks.
In a recent whitepaper published by Michael Stelzner (click HERE), all the lights are turning green for businesses, according to a survey he has done. The survey asked managers what they wanted to know most about Social Media. The managers who responded are apparently turning to Social Media, as a marketing tool, in droves because it is giving them results. That's great. I can see why.
But what scares me is that there is no mention of any significant number of managers responding to the survey asking about the information security risks of using Social Media. I'd like to know if ANY of the managers surveyed were concerned about security.
Do you want to know more about the security issues in using Social Media in a business environment? If so, please post a reply here.
There's also a quick Poll I put up here in the forums about what YOU want to know about security. It would be very helpful to the community if you could participate. |
