Subject: Stay rational - Tips for avoiding Swine Flu scams Risks in the News posted by ScottWright on Thursday, April 30th 2009 @ 9:06 PM
As with any major global crisis in the news, hackers, phishers and scammers will be actively trying to benefit from the Swine Flu Pandemic scare.
Please remember:
1) Don't click on links or attachments in unsolicited messages, no matter what kind of luck it says will befall you if you don't. The same goes for calling 1-800 numbers to donate money in aid of victims.
2) If you are planning to do anything to aid in fighting for the cause, make sure you are dealing with a reputable agency. Make sure YOU call THEM - don't act based on receiving a phone, Facebook, MySpace or email solicitation.
3) When searching for information on Google, or any other search engine, beware of fake sites. Scammers are learning how to manipulate search engine rankings so their fake sites get high rankings and seem reputable.
4) Check suspicious stories or claims in emails or blog or forum posts by going to www.snopes.com to see if it has been documented as a hoax or scam.
In general, if something seems suspicious, assume it is not legitimate unless you can find bona fide proof. |
